Because seasonal decorations are not stored onboard, ships can only be in port while the decorations are loaded and set up. A few days ago I posted the schedule for when each Carnival ship will be decorated for Christmas. Continuing our countdown to holiday cruise season, here are the special onboard activities that will be happening on all Carnival ships through the month of December. Specific days, times, and locations (unless already noted on the schedule below) will be available on your daily Fun Times or via the HUB app once you board.
When Are Holiday Decorations Removed?
There are only so many potential customers, and only so many rooms on Carnival's cruise ships to accommodate them. At some point, 50% new-to-cruise customers growth just isn't sustainable. In fact, if the new-to-cruise guest count leveled off at fourth-quarter 2023's high rate for all of 2024, 2024 fourth-quarter growth in new-to-cruise guests would be zero on a percentage basis. Meanwhile, if there were a decline in the number, the growth rate in new-to-cruise customers would be negative, even though it would still be at a high rate. Carnival has been benefiting from a resurgence in demand for cruises following the effective industry shutdown during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Of special interest will be the holiday decorations for the brand new Carnival Celebration as she celebrates her first holiday season with the cruise line. The ship will reveal her Christmas decorations on Sunday, December 4, 2022, just one month after she welcomes guests for the first time. Furthermore, most cruise lines employ separate professionals to hang holiday decorations, as regular crew members already have full schedules with their assigned duties. This ensures the ships can be fully decorated in just the few hours between when one cruise ends and the next begins later the same day.

Just as holiday decorations must be installed while each ship is in port, the decorations will likewise be removed between cruises as guests are debarking and embarking. Each ship is decorated by professionals – not the onboard crew – and therefore the decoration dates vary based on when each ship is in port to allow decorations and staff to be brought onboard for the seasonal transformation. It is wonderful that Carnival is attracting customers who have never been on a cruise before. It improves the outlook for future performance since those customers can become repeat cruisers. But investors need to take this company's talking point with a grain of salt. The numbers are impressive today, but they probably won't remain this impressive for very long. It is just too hard a growth rate to sustain given the economic sensitivity of the industry, the inherent constraints of ships and, well, the way basic math works.
